About the Author
Elizabeth Brown is an artist, author, poet, and retired 9-1-1 Communications Manager with nearly four decades of dedicated service at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. Throughout her career, one of her greatest passions has been helping children feel safe, confident, and prepared by teaching them when and how to call 9-1-1.
This passion inspired Adventures in 9-1-1 Education, featuring “Patches the 9-1-1 Bear”—a heart-centered children’s book series that blends real-life safety lessons with imagination, kindness, fun, and even real robots. Patches and his friends, Robbie Rescue and Fuzz E Bear, serve as warm, encouraging teachers of 9-1-1 safety, reminding children that helpers at 9-1-1 are always there and that staying calm truly matters.
Tears of the Thin Gold Line
Tears of the Thin Gold Line is a heartfelt tribute to 9-1-1 Dispatchers and the entire first responder community.
The Thin Gold Line represents Dispatchers—often unseen, yet essential to every emergency response. They are the first voice in moments of crisis and the steady presence guiding help when it is needed most.
The tears in the artwork symbolize the emotional weight carried by dispatchers, who bear witness to crisis, loss, fear, and courage from behind the headset.
Each color within the painting carries deep meaning:
Blue honors Law Enforcement.
Red honors Firefighters and Medical Responders.
Gold stands for Dispatch—the first voice, the calm in chaos, and the unseen lifeline.
Together, these colors honor the fallen and reflect the unity, sacrifice, strength, and resilience shared across all emergency services.
This piece is not only a tribute—it is a message of recognition, gratitude, and connection.
From my heart to yours.
